Would it be best to take a lump sum payment or take it over a long term for a lotto player that is in his 30s?

If I have my retirement in mutual funds and variable annuity accounts with AIG, how safe or unsafe are these? How much could I lose? Can they sell my retirement for cash? What happens if they file for bankruptcy?
